Rev. John Sherman purhased land in Trenton Falls after a visit in the early 1800's. He built he first house in 1820 and by 1822 expaned to accomodate overnight guests. His daughter Maria Sherman Moore and her husband Michael Moore expanded the hotel several more times until in the mid 1800's it had 100 rooms.

With the expansion of rail service visitors would board the train in Utica and arrive in Trenton Falls. Carriages or Tally-ho's  would line up to deliver the guests to the hotels in the area. Moore's Hotel was well known for its fine dining, picturesque scenery, and cultural events to include such entertainers as Jenny Lind.
